Metall schleifen - wie und womit schleift man Metall?
Metal is a very popular material both in industry and in the construction industry, but not only. It is extremely strong, so also its processing is not the simplest of tasks. It usually requires the use of specialized tools, which are selected depending on the effort and complexity of the work. In this case, how to carry out metal grinding to achieve the best result?
Grinding of metal – how to do it?
Grinding is a very important process in metalworking, as some details need to be made very precisely, for which it is necessary to smooth the surface. It’s also a safety enhancement for larger structures that are to be used by people.
So, how to grind metal? First of all, you need to choose the right processing method. Smaller parts or structures that do not require the highest degree of precision can be processed manually, in which case the most popular tool is an angle grinder. A small power tool has cutting accessories in the form of various discs.
In this situation, it is important to remember to choose the right abrasive – usually the disc has bonded sandpaper designed for grinding metal. Flap wheels, which are a much more aggressive choice, also work well. It is worth remembering that this is not the most precise solution. Therefore, if there is a possibility, a belt or orbital sander, for example, will work much better.
What to grind metal with? Discs and grinding belts are made of, among other things, alumina or silicon carbide, sometimes diamond (depending on the hardness of the metal being worked on). For finishing work, sponges or furs are also used for polishing.
How to grind metal? Other tools and solutions
For small jobs, it is worth considering the purchase of a bench grinder. As with handheld models, you can distinguish between disc and belt devices. Interestingly, belt-disc grinders are also encountered. The use of a grinding table provides greater control and precision. This solution will work well for workpieces with unusual shapes.
In industry, on the other hand, it is very common to use additional solutions that relate to literal grinding, although they are not fully it. This involves, for example, the use of electrochemical processes. This type of technology is used to process hard and non-plastic metals, such as titanium or aluminum. In this situation, the workpiece is placed in an electrolyte bath, which contains an electrode. With the flow of current, the top layer of the metal is significantly weakened. The component can then be more easily machined using traditional methods.
Another solution popular in the industry is rotor blasting. In this case, the metal workpiece is placed in a special chamber, into which the shot is introduced under high pressure. What is important about this technique is that you can grind parts with a complex design and unusual shape.
A moving turbine block is quite a convenience. This is an abrasive-stream machining technique, which can take various forms. Namely, the abrasive material can be glass dust or sand, which depends on the work to be done.
Grinding is not an easy task and requires a lot of attention. For industrial operations, abrasive-flux methods work best because of their speed, precision and ability to simply machine complex metal structures.
